Dec 16 Prompt: Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt Response: One tradition my family practices is every Christmas we all write a one page long letter to each other. In this letter we talk about the year with each other and what we enjoyed about. We talk about the upcoming year and in what ways it will be better than the last.

Dec 15 Prompt: How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt Response: Throughout my childhood Christmas had always been about the presents to me. All I was worried about and looking forward to were the material presents I would get. However as I grew older I started appreciating the other aspects of Christmas. I started to appreciate the effort my family and friends put in to get the gifts and to come up with them. I started appreciating giving gifts and being around family in general.

Dec 10Prompt: At the end of the novel, Celie reconnects with Nettie and forms more peaceful relationships with the people who once harmed her. Reflect on the theme of reconciliation. Have you ever restored a relationship, forgiven someone, or been forgiven in a way that changed you? How does the novel’s ending shape your understanding of forgiveness across different cultures or families?

Prompt Response: A time where I forgave someone in a way that changed me would be my childhood bullies. I used to have lots of grief due to them. But when they all outgrew bullying I was able to forgive them and even befriend them. I then realized that if I just let my resentment go, they will no longer have power over me. And from then on I have never let someone affect me like that.

Dec 9 Prompt: Write about a song that brings back specific memories

Prompt response: The song "Ensenada" by Sublime holds a very specific memory for me. It reminds me of the time me and best friend saw sublime live. We were at the Shakey knees music festival in Piedmont park. I remember singing this song with him word for word.

Dec 8 Prompt: Describe the best gift you ever received.

Prompt response: The best gift I ever received would be the Xbox my dad got for me about 10 years ago. I found an interest in many things through videos games and got well more than my moneys worth.

Dec 5 Prompt: When Celie says, “The God I been praying and writing to is a man. And act just like all the other mens I know,” she expresses disappointment, betrayal, and disillusionment. Discuss a moment in your own life when something you believed in turned out to be different than what you imagined. How did this realization shape your identity or worldview?

Prompt Response: When I was little, like every other child I used to believe in Santa. I believed whole heatedly that he was real. However one Christmas my brother got a DJ kit for a present. However we recognized the table it was displayed on from our garage. When we told out parents they admitted to us that Santa is not real.

Dec 3 Prompt: Pretend you are writing a blog entry as Celie; the moment you uncover the hidden letters. Describe what you would think, say, and do, and how this discovery would reshape how you see Mister and yourself. Reflect on why this moment would matter so much and how it would change your next choices.

Prompt Response: To say I would be mad would be an understatement. I would be livid. I would see Mister as a monster for keeping the letters from me. I would see myself as weak for not finding out sooner. I would not be able to trust mister again.

Dec 2 Prompt: In Letters 46–50, Celie begins to see Albert more clearly—his flaws, his regrets, and the ways he changes when he is no longer in complete control of her. Their relationship slowly shifts from fear and dominance to honesty and distance. Write about a relationship in your life that changed over time as you grew older or more aware. What made the dynamic shift, and how did your understanding of that person evolve?

Prompt Response: As me and my brother have grown up our relationship is vastly different than it used to be. We used to be very open with each other and would argue a lot. But now as we're older we don't really ever argue but we aren't nearly as close as we used to be. I understand him a lot more now and understand what he likes and what he doesn't more than ever.

Dec 1 Prompt: Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt Response: I got to meet a lot of my baby cousins for the first time over the break. This was very memorable because I will know them for the rest of my life.

Nov 19 Prompt: As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Prompt Response: I was very shocked when I found out that my parents are not perfect. I was about 13 when I first started noticing that my parents make mistakes too. At first I just assumed my parents were perfect but then at a certain point you realize that they are not. You realize that they are human and that they mess up sometimes just like everyone else

Nov 18 Prompt: These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Prompt Response: Was not there to do assignment.

Nov 14 Prompt: At the end of Letter 21, Celie and Sofia share a rare moment of laughter that softens the tension between them. Write about a time when you and a sibling or family member shared an unexpected moment of joy after things had been tense or confusing. Explain how that moment helped bring you closer.

Prompt Response: Me and my oldest brother have never gotten along. We are both very different people but we're still brothers. One time we got into an argument and were wrestling some. It got someone intense but after it was over we were able to share some good laughs at dinner.

Nov 12/13 Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Prompt Response: When I was younger I remember a time when I scraped my knee playing outside. I was crying because it hurt and my brother told me to rub some dirt in it to help. It did not end up helping and my wound got infected. I was mad at him for a second but got over it fast. I learned to think twice before blindly listening to others.

Nov 11 Prompt: Letters 11–16 show how relationships can be full of misunderstanding and pressure. Harpo wants love, but he also wants power. Sofia wants freedom, not control. Reflect on a time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship or relationship. What advice would you give to Harpo or Sofia if you could?

Prompt Response: My mother has a very strong desire for control. So much so that shes hurt relationships with me, my brother, and my father all for her desire to control. I would tell both Harpo and Sophia too put themselves in each other's shoes and find a middle ground together instead of just fighting.

Nov 10 In letters 6 -10, we see how Celie starts noticing the strength of people around her, like Shug Avery’s independence and confidence. Think about someone in your life who inspires you to be stronger or more confident. What qualities do they have that you admire and try to learn from?

Oct 24 Describe a time where you couldn't stop laughing

Prompt Response: A time where I couldn't stop laughing is when my friend ate the "One Chip Challenge" for a fantasy football punishment and had a hilarious reaction. None of us could stop laughing.

Oct 22 In "The Lamb" and "The Tyger", both poems suggest that beauty and danger can come from the same source. Describe a time when something or someone you admired also scared or challenged you. How did that experience change the way you see the world or the idea of “goodness”?

Prompt Response: A time where something I wanted scared me would be my first time stepping into the ring. I was terrified to the point of nearly throwing up as I knew there was a chance I went could get hurt. However despite that I powered through and dominated my opponent.

Prompt: At the end of the novel, Celie reconnects with Nettie and forms more peaceful relationships with the people who once harmed her. Reflect on the theme of reconciliation. Have you ever restored a relationship, forgiven someone, or been forgiven in a way that changed you? How does the novel’s ending shape your understanding of forgiveness across different cultures or families?

Prompt Response: The theme of reconciliation is a very powerful one because forgiveness is a great skill that not everyone has. It gives you the ability to release the negative emotions caused by someone hurting you and take the weight off your shoulders.
